Tras 19 años de guerra, la situación en Afganistán es catastrófica. EE.UU. y sus aliados no han logrado derrotar la insurgencia talibana y de otras fuerzas. La decisión de retirar las tropas norteamericanas tomada por el expresidente Trump puede tener consecuencias muy graves para la situación de esa nación, a pesar de las conversaciones de paz que se están realizando en Doha. En el plano interno, continúan manifestándose en el país actos de extrema violencia; corrupción y negligencia extendidas en los diferentes niveles de administración estatal y provincial; una situación humanitaria extremadamente compleja, con deficiencias sanitarias agravadas por la pandemia COVID 19, e insuficiencia alimentaria; y el país continúa siendo el principal productor y exportador de heroína a nivel global. La actual administración en Washington ha planteado que evaluará la situación y tomará decisiones al respecto, pero no parece claro si retirarán sus fuerzas o mantendrán una presencia militar.
