El proceso de deterioro interno de Estados Unidos como nación federal y de su régimen económico social, han generado una situación en la que cada vez se hace más evidente que las posibles soluciones para los problemas económicos y sociales que enfrenta el país, solo podrán beneficiar a un sector cada vez más limitado de su población, ubicado en la cúspide de su pirámide de ingresos. Lo anterior, unido a la creciente falta de competitividad económica ante terceros y los resultados de las recetas neoliberales aplicadas en los últimos 30 años, han creado una franja de marginación política y económica que tributa a movimientos de carácter nacionalista y que polariza el discurso electoral interno. Estas realidades tienen su expresión externa en el tipo de política exterior que Estados Unidos es capaz de implementar, en un claro cuestionamiento a las normas de convivencia multilateral que la Humanidad ha logrado articular en los últimos 75 años de su existencia.
